Shaking Whatever's Loose Free, 2021
Our relationship with our environment’s health, and consequently our own, is growing inexorably strained. More than ever, it’s sending us explicit warnings that many of the traditional ways in which we live and work are unsustainably short-sighted. There is a tendency to want to avoid or deny the necessary change that is now clearer than ever, and the resultant indifference only supports the impossible status quo. The sole way to make a truly protective difference is to change at scale; the obstacles we face require a collective effort to take what’s been given and thoughtfully seek better ways of being together, here. By pointing towards life, loss, and eventually hope, this project explores the possibility of a future constructed by connection to the brilliance of our world.
Similar to the uncertain future of our environment, experiences with illness have left me suspended in a state of insecurity. They’ve also offered me clarity on how I want to live. Shaking Whatever’s Loose Free is assembled schematically to pair my health journey to our changing climate, and the unavoidable consequences of inaction in both. Through formal and conceptual parallels in the pictures, the sequence tracks a passage through naivete, crisis, and disillusionment to – ultimately – the solace that I find in the beauty of the world around me.
